Volume Clip

Hide or restore a volume region and optionally apply the visible result.

Explore the Volume Clip feature overview →

Volume Clip removes regions from view through the object's volume. It lets you edit the clipping shape and restore hidden volume before committing the visible result.

Start a clip

  1. Select the object.
  2. Choose Tools > Utility > Volume Clip.
  3. Press Q and choose Rectangle, Circle, or Polygon.
  4. Orient the camera so the drawn shape cuts through the intended part.

Rectangle and Circle use a drag gesture. Polygon uses successive clicks; click the first point or press Enter to close it.

Edit the clipping shape

When the tool shows an editable draft, drag its handles to move or resize it. You can also use the configured Move, Rotate, and Scale shortcuts to switch the gizmo and transform the complete clipping shape. In Move mode, a selected polygon point can still be repositioned individually with the gizmo. Click the object to apply the draft, or use Enter to apply and close the draft.

The viewport instructions distinguish drawing, editing a draft, and the active clip operation. Press Escape to cancel a draft or exit the tool, as indicated.

Hide, restore, or invert

Drag to hide through the volume. Ctrl+Drag restores hidden volume. During draft editing, Ctrl toggles Hide/Reveal.

Invert affects the volume outside the drawn shape. The None, X, Y, and Z options control whether each clip is mirrored across a local axis.

Adjust Bevel and Chamfer when those controls are available for the current clip.

Apply Visible

Use Apply Visible to turn the current visible, closed result into the object's mesh geometry. Finish the active clipping edit first.

After applying, the removed region is no longer just hidden clip volume. Use Undo to return to the previous state if you need to recover it.

Preview hidden volume

In Quick Ops, Opacity Hidden controls how much of the hidden volume is shown. The default 0.00 keeps it invisible; 1.00 shows it fully opaque. Intermediate values provide a transparent preview without changing the clip or making the hidden part editable.

Slice Hidden

Use Slice Hidden in Quick Ops to copy the hidden volume into a separate object with its own mesh and SDF. The original object keeps its geometry and clip, and the new object keeps its position and material. Finish the active clipping gesture first.

The new object is selected after extraction. Undo removes the extracted object in one step. This also works when the entire original object is hidden.

When a shape is unavailable

Circle and Polygon can be unavailable when older or brush-created hidden volume remains. Restore that hidden volume first, following the tool's message.

If the object is still processing surface changes, wait for completion and retry. See Voxel Remesh and Surface Cleanup for the underlying working resolution.
