Sculpting

Use brushes, masks, and symmetry to refine a selected object's surface.

Updated

Explore the Sculpting & Masks feature overview →

Select an object, then open Brushes. Choose a brush and work directly on the model in the viewport.

Choose a brush

Brush Typical use
Draw Brush Add or remove surface volume.
Alpha Brush / Projection Brush Apply detail using an image alpha.
Smooth Brush Soften surface variation.
Move Brush Push and pull the form.
Transform Brush Transform an affected region.
Crease Brush Add crease-like detail.
Pinch Brush Tighten surface features.
Trim Brush Flatten or trim a surface region.
Clay Strips Brush Build broad sculpted strokes.
Inflate Brush Expand or contract the surface.
Mask Brush Protect regions while sculpting.

The available settings change with the brush. Use Properties and Q for its contextual controls.

Make a controlled stroke

  1. Start with a moderate radius and low strength.
  2. Drag with the left mouse button on the selected surface.
  3. Inspect the result from another angle.
  4. Use Undo if needed, then adjust the settings.

F enters brush size adjustment, and Shift+F enters strength adjustment. Move the mouse and confirm with a left click; Escape cancels the adjustment.

For brushes that support it, hold Ctrl to invert the stroke direction and Shift for temporary smoothing. Read the viewport instructions for the active brush, because modifiers differ by tool.

Adjust stroke behavior

Where available, choose a stroke type such as freehand or line. Radius sets the affected area; Strength sets how strongly the stroke acts. Falloff or hardness controls the transition toward the edge.

Tablet pressure can control Radius and Strength when the brush exposes these switches.

Use an alpha

Choose Alpha Brush or Projection Brush and load an alpha image from the brush's Alpha controls. Inspect a test stroke before adding repeated detail.

Keep the mesh resolution high enough for the intended feature size. Increasing brush strength cannot recover detail that the geometry cannot represent.

Use symmetry and masks

The Brushes panel offers Mirror axes and Radial symmetry around the object's local axis and origin. Set the origin and orientation deliberately before applying repeated strokes.

Use Mask Brush to protect regions. Its add and erase directions build or remove the mask.

See Voxel Remesh and Surface Cleanup when the object needs a different working resolution.
